Acting Attorney General Stuart Young has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the State’s failure to file a defence in a civil action claiming malicious prosecution.
The case was brought by nine former accused who were charged and tried for the kidnapping and murder of businesswoman, Vindra Naipaul-Coolman.
According to reports, the claim was filed by the men in May 2020, however the State failed to defend, leading to a judgement in their favour in July 2021.
It was referred for assessment and on Monday High Court Master Martha Alexander awarded them over $2 million each.
Mr Young says the AG’s Office will address the matter at a media conference tomorrow.
