Deputy POS Mayor: $300,000 spent on cleaning watercourses full of rubbish

Deputy Port of Spain Mayor Hillan Morean is appealing to citizens not to dispose of waste in the nation’s drains.

He says the Port of Spain City Corporation has spent approximately $300,000 in its latest effort to ensure the various watercourses are clear of debris ahead of the rainy season.

The Deputy Mayor says he is disgusted at the kinds of litter that has been collected, with food boxes and soft drink bottles at the top of the list.

According to the Guardian, he says 85 truckloads of rubbish were collected between Friday and Saturday which included old mattresses, construction equipment, tiling apparatus, food containers and plastic bottles.

He assured though that this is being taken to the Beetham Landfill.
