Drugs and assault rifles seized in Chaguanas

Two suspects have been arrested, as police seized large quantities of drugs and automatic assault rifles at Munroe Road, Chaguanas.

The exercise was coordinated overnight by Police Commissioner Gary Griffith, and involved officers of the Special Operations Response Team, the Strategic Services Agency and the Canine Unit.

Acting on intelligence gathered over the last 18 months, officers proceeded to a building along Macaya Trace, where they executed a search warrant.

Police are in the process of quantifying the street value of the find.

Speaking after the exercise, Commissioner Griffith says this exercise will send a clear message to criminals.

Mr Griffith says the assault rifles also demonstrate the type of firepower that criminals now have at their disposal, and believes that police officers need to defend themselves against such threats.

The Top Cop also thanked members of the public for providing information which aided in the success of the operation.
