Contrary to many rumours, Leonardo DiCaprio was not being considered to play the Joker before Joaquin Phoenix.

Many had speculated that Warner Bros liked the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio in the role, but as far as writer and director Todd Phillips was concerned, it was always Joaquin.

He recently told the New York Times that the role was specifically written for Phoenix.

That means Leonardo DiCaprio was never considered for the title role because it was crafted and envisioned from the start with Joaquin Phoenix in mind.

The trailer has earned some critical acclaim, and many have always believed he would do justice to the role.

Remember his role as Commodus in “Gladiator”?

That was a villain for the ages, and earned Phoenix some major acclaim.
