The HDC has turned the sod to reconstruct rental units at 23rd Street and 24th Street in Beetham Gardens.
This project meanwhile will be used as the template for the reconstruction and renovation of more units, as well as new construction, which will yield about 96 units upon completion.
The first building earmarked for reconstruction and renovation will result in improvements to six units.
The HDC says the four families occupying the current units will be relocated in two weeks to allow work on the first building, while the remaining four families will be relocated into units owned by the Land Settlement Agency.
Those units are expected to be completed at the end of September and once that happens, construction will begin on the second building.
The HDC says over time, it hopes to provide social housing in the following areas:
- Thomas Trace, Bon Air Gardens- 36 rental units
- The Edinburgh Towers Development, Chaguanas – 150 rental units
- Eastern Main Road, Laventille – 500 rental units, among others
