Almost $3m is being paid every month for security for State energy assets.
The assets, which now belong to companies replacing Petrotrin, have fallen victim of theft and sabotage in recent months, with reports suggesting losses of close to $20m as a result.
Despite this, Energy Minister Franklin Khan says security at the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery in particular has remained tight.
Mr Khan also revealed that the arrangement with Amalgamated is temporary.
Mr Khan was speaking in the Parliament this afternoon.
