Labour Day Messages 2022

An 8% wage increase to public servants will cost government $5 billion in backpay, according to the Prime Minister.

In his Labour Day message, Dr Keith Rowley said he is puzzled by the strong language in the public space following the initial offer of 2%, which has since been increased to 4%.

At 4%, he said, backpay will cost government $2.5 billion.

Dr Rowley believes government has attempted to be financially prudent while still aware of the difficulties of persons living on the marginal line.

The Opposition Leader believes the Working Class is under threat by the PNM government.

In her Labour Day message, Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar said workers are facing increasing challenges and worsening economic and social conditions.

She explained that the UNC has a clear plan to return the economy to a path of growth and create thousands of new jobs for T&T.

That plan includes reducing the tax burden, jumpstarting food security, investing in renewable energy and creating three new funds to mobilize financial resources.

The Opposition Leader said their track record is clear with over 50,000 jobs created and 135 wage negotiations settled during their time in office.

Unions must return to the National Tripartite Advisory Council, according to the Labour Minister.

In his Labour Day message, Mr Stephen Mc Clashie described the council as a body that mirrors the model of social dialogue described by the International Labour Organization.

He said it provides the forum for members to advance the interest of workers across this country.

The Minister reiterated to the unions that returning to the table would be a significant step in the right direction.
