A meeting will take place with the National Security Minister on Monday to discuss the safety of fishermen.
In a release, Couva North MP Ravi Ratiram reveals that several attacks at sea have been recorded in recent times, including one against Nicholas Seecharan, President of the Claxton Bay Fishing Association.
He says while Mr Seecharan’s boat was subsequently recovered, his engine, valued at $48,0000, was gone.
Mr Ratiram says the fishermen are in a state of despair, as pleas for help seem to have gone unanswered.
The MP wrote to the National Security Minister calling for a meeting to discuss the issue.
He welcomed the response, saying “this meeting is now scheduled for Monday June 14, 2021, at 3pm at the Ministry of National Security”.
103.1FM News spoke with Mr Ratiram who says only a handful of persons will be in attendance at the meeting with the Minister due to COVID-19.
Participating will be MP Ratiram and the President of the Carli Bay Fishing Association, as well as Mr Seecharan and Pointe a Pierre MP David Lee.
Mr Ratiram says a previous meeting with the TTPS has resulted in more patrols in fishing areas, however he believes the Ministry’s intervention is still urgently needed.
