Mom charged with failing to report sexual abuse of daughters

A 36-year-old woman has been charged with five counts of failing to report suspected sexual assaults on her daughters.

Her companion, a 40-year-old man, has also been charged with seven counts of sexual penetration of a child and one count of sexual touching of a child.

Recently, a 17-year-old girl walked into the Mayaro Police Station and reported that her stepfather had been sexually assaulting her and her 14-year-old sister for a number of years.

She also told officers that she confided in her mother on several occasions however nothing was done to stop the abuse.

Both are due to appear before a Mayaro Magistrate today.

The TTPS’ Child Protection Unit is reminding parents and guardians to exercise the highest degree of caution when it comes to the care and supervision of their children.

It stresses that many times, children fall victim to crimes and abuse by those closely-knitted to their family, and so, parents must be extremely vigilant and constantly screen those who are interacting with their children.
