Opposition Leader hits back at Govt for its stance on the Sedition Act

The Opposition Leader has condemned the Government’s recent stance regarding the Sedition Act.

National Security Minster Stuart Young previously stated that there were no immediate plans to repeal it, while the PM yesterday said there is a place for such laws.

Mrs Kamla Persad Bissessar has indicated her intention to take the matter to Parliament.

Members of the House of Representatives have received copies of the notice and the Private Member’s Bill submitted by her for the Sedition Repeal Bill, 2019.

The explanatory statement argued that the Sedition Act, which came into force in April 1920, has no place in our modern society.

The House of Representatives will next meet on Monday.
