Opposition refuses to support FOIA amendments

The Opposition says it will not support the Attorney General’s new amendments to the Freedom of Information Act.

In a release, its leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says AG’s decision to change the amendments in the wake of public outcry, shows that Government was prepared to rush “flawed legislation” through the Parliament.

She also criticized his reasoning that the changes were intended to save the State money, saying focus should instead be on the unnecessary awarding of certain contracts.

She also insists that the Act is vital in holding Government accountable to the people, which is why her side will not support the proposed changes.
