Opposition still not backing FOIA despite Government backtrack on one amendment

The Opposition believes that Government’s backtrack on an amendment to the Freedom of Information Act only came after political and public pressure.

The State was seeking to change the period for public authorities to respond to an FOIA request from 30 days to 45 days.

However, the Prime Minister in Parliament yesterday revealed that the current 30-day period will remain.

Despite this change of heart, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the amendment compelling public authorities to report to the Attorney General is unacceptable.

As such she says the Opposition cannot support the bill.
