Possible amnesty for Cubans, Chinese and African detainees

The Venezuelan registration process could be extended to allow migrants from Africa, China, Cuba and Caribbean islands similar amnesty terms.

These nationals, among others, are currently locked up at the Immigration Detention Centre for overstaying their time in T&T.

National Security Minister Stuart Young says this has been discussed at Cabinet, and recommendations will be presented to the National Security Council soon.

As outlined by the Prime Minister, these migrants are still locked up since it is too costly to deport them.

Meanwhile, Minister Young is assuring that IDC detainees deemed to be criminals are not being allowed to register.

He says Venezuelans who are currently detained only for overstaying their time can register for the amnesty.
