Prisons’ Comm: Lack of follow-up contribute to high levels of prisoners returning to system

The lack of a proper follow-up system is being blamed for the high level of recidivism rates in the nation’s prisons.

This view was expressed by Prisons Commissioner Gerard Wilson when he appeared before a Joint Select Committee today.

Also appearing before the Committee was Vision on Mission Programme Director, Gordon Husbands who believes, specific programs are needed to ensure inmates are properly rehabilitated.

He also raised concerns about the need for probation officers to keep a check on persons who leave the prison system.

The JSC, Chaired by Paul Richards, is looking at the challenges of prisoner re-entry into society.
