Speaker rejects motion to debate flooding issue

A motion brought by Opposition MP Dr. Tim Gopeesingh, calling for the Lower House to discuss the recent devastating floods, was denied by the Speaker this afternoon.

The MP argued that the matter relates to the complete devastation of nearly 2,000 homes, property, possession and the resulting damage to the mental, physical and emotional well-being of over 10,000 residents.

Dr. Gopeesingh said residents are experiencing health hazards, and stressed that the matter is urgent because of the threats of continuous rainfall, which can bring more flooding.

He noted that his Caroni East constituency was among the worst hit.

But the Speaker did not entertain the motion.
