The THA’s Division of Food Production has sounded a warning about the invasive Giant African Snail.
Persons travelling to Tobago from Trinidad are being asked to check the undercarriage and vehicle tyres for snails.
The snail has a reddish brown shell with cream longitudinal stripes and is known to consume a variety of plants, including vegetable and other crops.
It is also a potential vector of the rat lung worm that causes meningitis in humans.
Persons should use plastic gloves when removing or destroying snails and wash produce before consumption.
Snail sightings can be reported to the Food Crop Production Unit at 639-4616.
