Police Commissioner Gary Griffith is defending the recent introduction of tasers for officers on duty.
At least 100 tasers are already in the hands of officers, who have been trained to handle non-lethal weapons, with an additional 600 to be purchased for use in the next year.
Pepper spray is also being used, and the aim here is for police to use their guns as a last resort.
The Police Social and Welfare Association has since expressed concern about the potential exposure of liability should someone be injured or killed by the use of tasers.
The Top Cop points out that these devices are widely used by police officers in USA, Canada, UK, and France.
And while he admits they may have varying effects, these are minimal when compared to the use of a firearm.
