Trade Minister: “Every evidence” of increased local food production

There is evidence of an increase in food production in T&T, says the Trade Minister, in the midst of “imported inflation.”

Speaking in Parliament today, Mrs Paula Gopee-Scoon explained that T&T’s inflation rate of 4.1% year-on-year is lower than the likes of the United States.

She explained that price increases are being fuelled by “imported inflation” sparked by global factors and assured that government has put measures in place, including removal of VAT on some items.

However, she was asked by Senator Wade Mark whether government’s $300 million agricultural stimulus helped counteract rising prices by increasing local food production.
