Trade unions want to be included as essential services

Trade unions are dismayed by their exclusion from the list of essential services in the most recent COVID-19 regulations.

In a media release, the Trade Union Federations noted that they wrote to government on May 6th 2021, underlining the importance from them to be recognized as such.

It said that it represents a significant majority of workers in the essential industries.

The federations believe that deeming unions non-essential jeopardises the ability and right of representation of workers who are now vulnerable.

It added that unions also represent workers at the Industrial Court which remains operational as an essential service.

The unions are calling for this situation to be rectified as soon as possible.
