Tributes are being paid to Master Artist, Dr LeRoy Clarke, who passed away today.
He was 82-years-old.
In a statement, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said while he was truly gifted painter and poet, “those labels alone do not do him or his work justice”.
She referred to him as an intellectual, who helped to transform Caribbean culture, and proved that Caribbean artists could stand shoulder to shoulder with those from anywhere around the world.
Also paying tribute is Tourism and Culture Minister Randall Mitchell, said T&T owes a debt to Mr Clarke for his life’s contribution.
In 1998, Dr Clarke was conferred the title “Master Artist’ by the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.
In 2008 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the UTT, having before been designated an Honorary Fellow by the same university in 2005.
