T&T has maintained a Tier 2 ranking in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2020.
According to the report, while T&T does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, it is making significant efforts to do so.
It also points to several measures taken to improve counter trafficking efforts, including screening and identifying more victims, investigating traffickers, prosecuting eight suspected traffickers, and increasing anti-trafficking training for its officials.
At the same time however, it points out that T&T is yet to secure a conviction under its 2011 anti-trafficking law, funding for victim assistance was reduced, and the laws did not provide immigration relief for victims or allow educational opportunities for vulnerable refugee children.
The National Security Ministry says it has taken note of the recommendations made in the report and will “take these into account going forward.”
T&T has been ranked at Tier 2 since 2017.
