UNC criticizes Govt’s handling of COVID-19

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the Prime Minister had no choice but to take her advice to shut down non-essential services, as she accused him of “willful and dangerous mismanagement” of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a media release issued this afternoon she also accused the Government of “hiding the true statistics of COVID-19 infections” in T&T.

She has since called on the Health Minister in particular to explain why only 400 COVID-19 tests were done in the past month, despite the UNC calling for increased testing.

She also wants the Government to adequately, effectively, properly and competently inform all citizens as to the exact and precise details of this “shutdown initiative”.

On another note, she fired back at criticism of her statements over the past few weeks, saying: “I do no need the PNM’s permission to speak out on any matter, especially one of such serious national concern which threatens to destroy our country’s economy, health and the very lives of our citizens.”

Despite her criticism however, Mrs Persad-Bissessar is urging citizens to heed every single precaution and legislative measure implemented thus far by the State, including staying at home, respecting the quarantine and new restrictions on movement, and safeguarding their health and that of their families.
