UNC leader: we will “reconsider” taxes on foreign used vehicles

UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she will “reconsider” taxes on foreign used cars, should her party be elected to office.

During a virtual meeting on Thursday night, she stated that the introduction of foreign used cars made it possible for the ordinary citizen to own their own vehicle.

She believes however that tax increases have since had a significant impact.

She believes doing so will make foreign used cars more affordable.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar also vowed to reintroduce a revamped Land for the Landless programme to make housing more affordable to lower income persons.

On the matter of revenue earnings, she promised to raise $4.5 to $7 billion in revenues per year by strengthening the Board of Inland Revenue and the Customs and Excise Division.

She reiterated her disdain for the proposed Revenue Authority, which she believes is not needed.

Instead, she said she intends to alleviate the tax burden by simplifying the VAT regime, removing food from the VAT net, lower corporation tax and reform the tax regime in our oil and gas industry.
