Kieron Pollard has lamented the 23 extras leaked by the West Indies as they lost to India by 6 wickets in the opening T20I.
India’s chase of 208 for victory was aided by sloppy bowling by the regional team which allowed 14 wides and 3 no-balls among their extras.
This was coupled with Virat Kohli’s 94 not out from 50 balls – his highest T20I score – and KL Rahul’s 62 at the top of the order.
However, looking at the positives, the West Indies’ batting effort (207/5 in 20 overs) pleased captain Pollard.
Shimron Hetmyer, who scored just 43 runs during the three T20Is against Afghanistan last month, found form with a 41-ball 56, while Brandon King, who also had a horrid time against the Afghans, made 31 from 23 balls.
Evin Lewis, who had a much better series, continued his form to make 40 from just 17 balls.
Speaking after the game, Pollard said, “Batters did a good effort. You’d take 208 ten out of ten times. We lost due to the extras column. Nearly 2 and a half overs of extra deliveries. Yes, it was a batting wicket, but if we executed our plans better, it could’ve been a different story.”
Kohli was named Man of the Match – he is now tied with Afghanistan’s Mohammed Nabi for the most MoM awards in T20Is.
