It’s official – Australia’s Steve Smith will not feature in the 3rd Ashes Test in Leeds.

Head Coach Justin Langer confirmed the news today as the squad trained ahead of the match starting on Thursday.

Smith became the first player in international cricket to be substituted out of a match following a scary blow to the neck from Jofra Archer during the 2nd Test at Lord’s.

He was replaced by Queensland’s Manus Labuschagne who went on to make 59 to ensure Australia drew the match and retain a 1-0 lead.

Labuschagne appears to be the favourite to take Smith’s place in the XI for the clash in Leeds.

Smith has been in fine form during the Ashes, scoring 142, 144 and 92 in his three innings so far.

He now has two weeks to get ready for the fourth Test in Manchester, which starts on September 4th, with a three-day tour match in Derby from August 29th-31st.

Australia need just one more win in the series to retain the Ashes.
