Ben Stokes will lead England in the first Test against West Indies as Joe Root misses the game for the birth of his 2nd child.

Root also misses England’s three-day intra-squad warm-up match starting tomorrow and the Test starting on Wednesday 8th July.

He will go into a seven-day self-isolation period at home once he leaves hospital with his family and will join the squad ahead of the second Test at Emirates Old Trafford on Monday 13th July.

In the interim, Durham all-rounder Stokes, who has been Root’s Test vice-captain for almost a year, will captain the side for the first time.

The England and Wales Cricket Board says Lancashire’s Jos Buttler will assume vice-captaincy duties.
