The Tokyo Olympic Games, scheduled to begin on July 24th, have been postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was taken by the International Olympic Committee, which says it will now take place no later than summer 2021.
The proposal for a delay came from Japan’s Prime Minister, and the Paralympic Games is also postponed until next year.
The IOC’s final decision was taken based on the information provided by the World Health Organization, which stated that the pandemic was accelerating, as nearly 400,000 cases have been recorded worldwide.
The postponement of the games it stated was to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.
